10 Tips to Follow When Shopping for New Appliances

My wife and I recently undertook a kitchen renovation, which is still ongoing. Once completed, I’ll share our story, pictures, and some numbers but that will likely turn into a novel! Meanwhile, here’s some advice about one aspect that all homeowners will eventually come face with: purchasing new appliances.

My tendency is to use things until they break or stop functioning (if I can’t fix them). All four major kitchen appliances (above-range microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator and gas range) were mostly functional despite being at least 20 years old – though each was horribly inefficient and some appeared close to failing completely. With my remodeling project for countertop, sink, backsplash it was time for updates!

My first stop when searching for new appliances was Craigslist, as I’d heard it was great for finding appliances at discounted prices. While Craigslist can indeed provide great finds at reduced costs for older, inefficient or dinged-up white models – you might find better luck. In my city which was quite active on Craigslist (50-mile radius and 30-day listing history available), not much caught my eye and what did typically appeared was either overpriced or did not meet size and dimension requirements of departing appliances leaving behind spaces in its wake.

However, I do not want to discourage you from first thoroughly exploring Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace as these have taken up much of the local reselling space. If your budget is limited and aesthetic considerations don’t matter much, you might just find some amazing bargains there!

Not everyone enjoys buying new appliances, but I was lucky that there wasn’t an emergency situation that required immediate purchase from an in-stock model. With time on my side, I used this month’s research as an opportunity to observe pricing trends and hunt down great bargains.
