My Story on Converting from Multi-Blade Razor to Safety Razor for Postpubescent Life
Since postpubescence, I had used disposable and cartridge razors. Like many in the 90’s era, I began my shaving journey using cheap, plastic handle disposable razors with 1 (usually cheap and dull) blade. You use it a few times until it started pulling hair out instead of cutting it – an exercise in wastefulness and pain!
After trying the Gillette Mach 3, which features three blades per cartridge system, my results improved, yet their price tag skyrocketed significantly.
After that, I lost track of blade count (anyone remember SNL Platinum Mach 14 parody?).
I tried several variations of 5-blade Gillette systems, ultimately opting for disposable cartridges containing Fusion Power Proglide blades which provided a close and comfortable shave; unfortunately they don’t last forever though!
At an average of nearly $4 per cartridge (for real), they’re certainly not cheap; in fact, they’re expensive enough to be frustratingly costly.
My wife doesn’t mind me having some stubble on my face, so I only used an 8-pack for once or twice weekly grooming – helping soften the blow of $32. On average, each set lasted around one month – costing roughly $50 annually without inflation or missed returns on investments. Over 20 years that totals more than $1,000!
At one point, I became fed up with paying so much and told Gillette to take their razors back… well… OK… that would hurt so let’s not.
