Choosing Contentment Over Consumerism of Upgrades

Back in 2007, Mrs. 20SF and I moved into our second home together. When settling into the living room with its massive built-in entertainment center as its centerpiece, we stared in disbelief at our tiny TV sitting smack dab in its center – which we had purchased using money earned through odd jobs when I was still in middle school; its narrow profile stood in stark contrast to its cavernous opening slotted for a 55” screen and looked odd sitting there! It was time for an upgrade.

As embarrassing as this might have seemed, I wasn’t tempted into purchasing the first good TV deal I found. Instead, I conducted research into which platform would likely become dominant for video definition and discovered 1080p HD to be its dominant standard. After shopping around for several months before purchasing our 48” Vizio HD TV from Costco — at that time a fairly high-end unit that cost us around $800 — we decided that we were happy with it meeting all our viewing needs and potentially lasting us a long time – we felt it had met all our viewing needs and looked forward to its long life promise!

Since that purchase, many new visual TV technologies have come and gone… some appear every holiday season while some have simply vanished completely…
