Over the years I’ve visited multiple gyms, though never paid for one (price being one factor); regardless, even if membership were free I wouldn’t see much reason to join one.
My philosophy for adopting this position stems from:
Any time it becomes more of a burden to visit another place (like a gym) to exercise, I become less likely to do it. No desire exists in using strange equipment laden with sweat and germs from strangers!
Since I’m already married, one of the main advantages of gym membership (meeting attractive and fit partners at a gym) is no longer relevant for me. Because my goal isn’t quite “ripped”, but more like “mostly ripped”, most of my exercise needs can easily be met outside of gyms.
I save money (the average gym membership costs $58, while an estimated $39 of it goes unused due to underuse), but don’t have the time. From driving there and parking there to changing and dressing – that adds up to 40 minutes each way without taking into account waiting times for machines!
Gyms can be notoriously filthy places – as we have witnessed with COVID-19 outbreaks. So instead, I have chosen a combination of options such as these.
While working, I was cycling 20 miles each way to and from work (about 20 miles each week). From spring through fall I averaged 60 miles a week of cycling; additionally I spent at least 10 hours per week walking my dog; adopting an energetic pup can do wonders for your health!
I dedicate approximately 30 minutes, three times per week, to workout using the 7-minute routine I discussed here as well as additional strength training exercises.
The first three are enjoyable and cover my cardio needs without breaking the bank, while maintaining and building full body strength are often challenging to get motivated for; that is likely why most people opt for pricey gym memberships.
If you love everything about your gym – its price, membership benefits, and how you use it – great. If not, continue reading…
