Outside of sharing tips on finding a commuter bike, I want to offer advice for how best to commute itself, in order to ensure both its safety and enjoyment. After five years of biking commuter in an urban environment without major incidents (thankfully!), I have picked up on various lessons (some which I wish had been learned sooner!). Therefore, I will share what I know with the aim of encouraging and allaying fears – hoping other experienced commuters do the same!
Please don’t be overwhelmed or intimidated by this list; feel free to ask any questions that arise. I find commuting by bike one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling healthy habits I’ve picked up over time; when weather prevents me from riding regularly I become anxious and irritable! The following commuter bike gear and tips should enable more regular biking experiences with more pleasure; safety-related ones should be mandatory while many of the gear ones depend on personal preferences.
1. Wear Your Bike Helmet Properly
I know – if I fail to mention this first, the bike helmet police will come scurrying out. Yes, helmets may look silly, be uncomfortable and even mess up your hair; but they could save your life. Here is an affordable helmet designed to work both for road and trail riding: Click here.
