My Budget-Friendly DIY Kitchen Renovation: Total Cost $3,329

How We Completed Our Affordable Kitchen Renovate
Kitchen renovations can be expensive (the average costs hover around $27K!). But with some hard work and creativity from DIY enthusiasts like yourself, they don’t have to be. In this story I share how a major kitchen upgrade using high quality materials cost just over $3K with this approach! Everything began as just one small leak!

My kitchen faucet had begun rusting through at one of its welding points, leading to a tiny slow leak that occasionally got big enough to start puddling onto my cheap (and inherited) laminate countertop and seep through key seam points where water seeped in, weakening glue bonds and eventually leading to bubbled up spots on its own. Finally, it had come time for action. I wanted something done about it immediately.

At this point, I knew both the faucet and countertop needed some updating, but when replacing a countertop it also necessitates updating its backsplash (due to different heights of new counters). Since my outdated and unsightly countertop wasn’t going away anytime soon anyway, this fact didn’t cause too much worry or disappointment for me.

Meanwhile, several of my appliances were nearing 20 years of use and showing their age in terms of energy use and appearance – they no longer matched anything in the kitchen and consisted of black, white, and worn finishes that clashed. While normally I could overlook such issues with grace, they warranted replacement to ensure optimal functionality for years to come.

My stainless sink was small, loud, cheap, scratched-up contractor grade sink with very limited depth for holding and washing kitchenware. Although I wish I’d taken more comprehensive photographs (post backsplash tear down), here’s one taken “before”.

As you can probably tell from the picture, my cabinets had always been one of the highlights of our kitchen. Built from scratch by their previous homeowner and boasting a rustic, natural aesthetic that we find pleasing, these custom made pieces were custom built from scratch and looked fantastic despite needing minor touch ups here and there – they had even saved us thousands as replacement cabinets can cost upwards of $10,000.00 each! After hearing that ours cost less than $7,000 total we felt truly blessed that these beauties remained.
